If you live in Kuala Lumpur, chances are your day involves hours of looking down at a screen.
Checking messages during the MRT commute.
Scrolling through emails at the office.
Watching videos before bed.
While it may feel harmless, this habit can slowly create a condition often called “Tech Neck.”
At Movement Chiropractic, we frequently see patients experiencing neck tension, headaches, and shoulder stiffness that are directly linked to prolonged phone and laptop use.
The body was designed for movement and balance, not for holding the head in a forward position for hours.
What Is “Tech Neck”?
Tech Neck refers to neck strain caused by prolonged forward head posture, often when using smartphones, tablets, or laptops.
When your head tilts forward, the weight placed on your cervical spine increases dramatically.
To help visualise this, imagine the weight your neck has to support:
• Neutral head position → about 4–5 kg
(roughly the weight of a small watermelon or a 5 kg bag of rice)
• 30° forward tilt → about 18 kg
(similar to carrying almost four 5-kg bags of rice)
• 60° forward tilt → up to 27 kg
(about the weight of a large suitcase or a child sitting on your neck)
When we look down at our phones for long periods, the muscles and joints in the neck must constantly support this extra load.
Over time, this stress can lead to:
• neck stiffness
• tight upper trapezius muscles
• headaches
• shoulder blade pain
• numbness or tingling in the arms or fingers
Many patients believe their pain comes from “sleeping wrong.”
But in reality, the problem often develops from daily screen habits and prolonged forward head posture.
Why Tech Neck Is So Common in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur
KL has a fast-paced digital lifestyle.
Many people spend:
8–10 hours working at a desk or even more
commuting while using phones
relaxing at night with tablets or laptops
Without regular movement, the muscles around the neck and shoulders become overworked and tight, while other muscles become weak and inactive.
This imbalance creates tension that gradually builds throughout the day.
5 Signs Your Neck Is Under Too Much Screen Stress
Your body often sends early warning signals.
Common symptoms include:
✅Persistent neck stiffness
Especially after long workdays.
✅Pain between the shoulder blades
A common complaint among laptop users.
✅Frequent tension headaches
Often starting from the base of the skull.
✅Tight upper trapezius muscles
The shoulders feel constantly elevated.
✅Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
Sometimes caused by nerve irritation in the neck.
If these symptoms continue for weeks or months, the spine may start losing its natural mobility.
Why “Perfect Posture” Isn’t the Real Solution
Many people try to solve Tech Neck by forcing themselves to sit perfectly upright all day.
However, the body isn’t designed to stay still.
At Movement Chiropractic, we emphasise an important idea:
Instead of chasing perfect posture, the key is regular movement.
Small, frequent movements throughout the day help the spine stay mobile and reduce tension buildup.
3 Simple “Movement Snacks” for Your Neck
Here are three gentle movements you can do during short breaks.
1. Chin Retraction
Sit upright and gently draw your chin backward, creating a “double chin.”
Hold for 5 seconds, repeat 5–8 times.
This helps activate the deep neck stabilising muscles.
2. Shoulder Blade Reset
Roll your shoulders backward and squeeze the shoulder blades together.
Hold for 5 seconds.
Repeat 10 times.
This counteracts the forward shoulder posture caused by screen use.
3. Thoracic Extension
Place your hands behind your head and gently extend your upper back.
Take a deep breath while opening the chest.
Repeat 5 times.
This helps restore mobility in the upper spine.
Occasional neck stiffness is common.
However, if you experience:
persistent neck pain
headaches from the neck
numbness or tingling in the arms
difficulty turning your head
it may indicate restricted joint movement or nerve irritation.
A professional spinal assessment can help identify the underlying cause and restore proper movement.
Restoring Natural Movement
At Movement Chiropractic, our approach focuses on helping the spine move naturally again, rather than forcing it into rigid alignment.
Through gentle chiropractic care, soft-tissue techniques, and movement guidance, we aim to help your body regain its natural balance.
Because when the spine moves well, the body often begins to feel better as a whole.
